Transport Secretary Mark Harper has refused to say whether he believes comments made by Lee Anderson about Sadiq Khan were racist.

Mr Anderson, MP for Ashfield, said last week that he believed "Islamists" had "got control" of the London mayor - sparking claims of Islamophobia.

Speaking to Sky's Kay Burley, Mr Harper said the remarks were "weren't true" and were "quite wrong to say", but he refused to be drawn on whether the MP should have the Tory whip restored.

Mr Anderson has said he fully accepts there was "no option" but to suspend the whip, adding that he "will continue to support the government's efforts to call out extremism in all its forms, be that antisemitism or Islamophobia".
