The Chancellor has said the government is "beginning to win the battle against inflation."

It comes after a sharp decline in the rate of inflation to 4.6%, driven by a big easing in energy costs.

Jeremy Hunt said: "The government has a very important role in bringing down inflation because we are responsible for the whole fiscal context.

"We took difficult decisions to bring borrowing and debt down and as a result of that, we made it easier for the Bank of England to do their job."
