Lee Cain, Boris Johnson's former Downing Street director of communications, has told Sky News "it is a pretty gloomy picture for the Conservatives" heading towards an election.

He told Sophy Ridge the polling looked "pretty bleak" in the Red Wall constituencies - and the party will be looking to limit damage and "keep as many seats as possible".

Asked about winning the general election, Mr Cain said he "doesn't see a way through that".
