Family and friends waited anxiously in the arrivals lounge and car park for more than 130 people arriving in the UK, including women with small children and elderly people in wheelchairs.

One man described his experience as a "nightmare" being in the middle of the conflict and likened it to a Bond movie, before thanking British servicemen and women who risked their lives to help them.
