Labour by-election wins: 'They were terrible results', says Theresa May's ex-chief of staff

Theresa May's former chief of staff Gavin Barwell has said last night's by-election results "were terrible" for the Conservative Party.

He told Sophy Ridge: "They showed the Prime Minister's net zero speech and conference speech made no difference to the situation.

"I don't think this is really a verdict on him, it's a verdict on what came before him, the damage that Boris Johnson and Liz Truss did to the Conservative brand, which he's struggling to recover from."

His comments come after Labour scored a double election victory in Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire.
