Israel is hopeful a significant number of hostages could be released by Hamas "in coming days," its ambassador to the US, Michael Herzog, has told ABC.

Deputy national security adviser Jon Finer said the agreement would free "considerably more than 12" hostages and likely include an extended pause in the fighting, allowing for the distribution of humanitarian aid.
