The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to retaliate after Hamas launched a surprise attack.

Hamas sent fighters across the border into Israel and launched thousands of rockets into the country.

Israeli authorities say "soldiers and civilians" have been abducted and taken hostage by militants - with reports of at least 250 people killed and more than 1,400 injured.
