Home Secretary promises 'prompt' response to Couzens report

The home secretary has given a statement in the Commons after an independent inquiry found that Sarah Everard's killer should never have been a police officer.

James Cleverly said he will "carefully consider" the report's 16 recommendations, and promised that the Home Office's response will be "prompt".

The report, the first of three being published by Lady Elish Angiolini, delivered a damning verdict on how three separate police forces "could and should" have stopped Wayne Couzens.

The firearms officer will never be released from prison after he used his police-issued warrant card to stage a fake arrest and snatch Ms Everard in Clapham, south London, on 3 March 2021.
