James Cleverly has defended his trip to China insisting "diplomacy makes a difference," during the first visit to Beijing by a UK foreign secretary in five years.

Mr Cleverly is meeting the foreign affairs minister and the vice president, but it comes amid a rift in his own party back home about whether the government should take a tougher stance on China.
