Chancellor admits autumn general election is the 'working assumption'

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has told Sky News the "working assumption" is that the government will call a general election for the autumn.

There had been speculation Rishi Sunak would move the vote forward to May.

Mr Hunt was speaking after Wednesday's budget and suggestions there may be another major government fiscal event before an election is called.

Labour has been pushing for an early vote as they lead in the polls, but more time could allow the Tories to give an autumn statement and offer further tax cuts.
