Firefighters tackling wildfires in the Canary Islands have been drenched in a red retardant that was dropped from a plane passing overhead.

Fires have affected more than 18 square miles and forced more than 4,000 people to be moved as part of evacuations in La Palma, according to the president of the Canary Islands.
