The building of new smart motorways is being cancelled following concerns over safety and costs, however, existing stretches will remain and be subjected to a safety refit.

Jason Mercer died in 2019 while driving to work on a smart motorway. His wife, Claire Mercer, went on to found Smart Motorways Kill and says her husband would still be alive had there been a hard shoulder.
