Sherman filed the first federal lawsuit on behalf of the families of three children who survived the shooting alleging the Uvalde school district, law enforcement officials, gun makers and others acted negligently and their repeated failures contributed to the high number of casualties and injuries.
Nineteen children and two teachers were killed in the shooting that happened May 24, 2022. It took heavily armed officers 77 minutes from the time they arrived to the school to kill the 18-year-old gunman.
The DOJ's report found that the responding officials Police officials waited too long to confront the gunman, acted with “no urgency” in establishing a command post and communicated inaccurate information to grieving families.
