US President Joe Biden has attended a banquet dinner at Dublin Castle after taking part in a tree planting and ringing of bells ceremony at Aras an Uachtarian with President of Ireland Michael Higgins.

The president started with some thank yous and a few family and political anecdotes, while again peppering in a few lines of Irish poetry - one of his well-known passions.

"Together you've always prevailed," he told the guests - saying people around the world "know they can count on Ireland".

In a reminder to continue cooperation and the pursuit of peace, the US president said: "The decisions we make now will determine what the next three or four decades are going to look like.
