Russia carried out a huge bombardment to destroy Ukrainian food supplies, quell victory day celebrations and "seize the initiative" ahead of Ukraine's counteroffensive, according to a military expert.

Sean Bell described the attacks as "one of the biggest volleys" ever launched by Russia so far and, as air raid sirens blast across Ukraine, he said it is likely to continue.
