The Prime Minister has said although he wants to reduce the historically high tax burden, he insisted halving inflation is the priority when speaking to broadcasters on a visit to Burnley.

He said "the best tax cut that I can deliver right now for the country is to halve inflation" before adding: "This is what Margaret Thatcher did, this is what Nigel Lawson did."
