Grant Shapps' appointment prompted questions about how suited he was for the role, given he does not have a military background - as Mr Wallace had.

Pressed by Kay Burley, Mr Shapps was unable to say how many ranks there are in the army (Kay later tells him there are 12).

But he defended his appointment, saying he would do it his way: "What the Ministry of Defence needs is the highly experienced cabinet ministers who can run a complex infrastructure orientated department.
