Rishi Sunak has ended weeks of speculation and said there will not be a general election on 2 May - the day of the local elections.

The election needs to take place in the UK by the end of January 2025, and there had been speculation the prime minister could call it in the spring.

"There won't be a general election on that day," he told ITV.

"But when there is a general election, what matters is the choice."
