The chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Simon Byrne had been under pressure after a data breach last month where information on about 10,000 officers and staff was accidentally disclosed online.

Mr Bryne has now quit following an emergency meeting of the Northern Ireland Policing Board (NIPB), which is the oversight body for the PSNI.

Chair of the NIPB, Deirdre Toner, said: "Regardless of the rights and wrongs, it is now time for someone new to lead this proud and resolute organisation."
