Removing critical medical cover is "the wrong thing to do", says Labour's shadow health secretary, as nurses in emergency departments, intensive care and cancer wards plan to strike for the first time.

Matthew Taylor, CEO of the NHS Confederation, also raised concerns over the possibility of nurses and junior doctors walking out at the same time in the dispute over pay.
