At least six people have died after a fire broke out overnight at a four-storey hostel in the capital, Wellington, according to New Zealand's Prime Minister Chris Hipkins.

Fire and Emergency District manager Nick Pyatt said the fire was a "multi-fatality incident" and that "our thoughts at this time, are with the families of those who perished".
