Donald Trump has "put American and European soldiers at increased risk" with his comments at a campaign rally, NATO has said.

The former US president told his supporters he would let Russia "do whatever the hell they want" to members of the alliance that don't pay enough on time for defence.

A NATO statement said: "Any suggestion that allies will not defend each other undermines all of our security, including that of the US, and puts American and European soldiers at increased risk."
