Israel has carried out airstrikes which it says were aimed at wiping out Hamas in areas of southern Gaza, killing at least 49 Palestinians despite ordering people in the north to flee there.

The United Nations human rights office has said Israel's siege of Gaza and its evacuation order could amount to the international crime of the forcible transfer of civilians.
