In a speech to a right-wing think tank in New York, Suella Braverman suggested the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention needs updating to stop "simply being gay or a woman" being a reason for people to claim asylum in the UK.

Labour's shadow science secretary, Peter Kyle has said that Braverman's language was that of a "shock jock" rather than a home secretary.
