New Home Secretary James Cleverly, has given his first major speech in front of the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners and National Police Chiefs Council.

In it he promised to "back the police" at every stage when "you do the right thing".

He added: "I will back you when you take the action that you need to take. I want you to know that I will be critical if I think I need to be critical, but I will always do so professionally, calmly, directly, so we always maintain that professional working relationship."
