Temperatures are set to rise even further in southern Europe as the region continues to grapple with an unrelenting heatwave.

A second weather system is pushing up from northern Africa, bringing more scorching conditions.

Some 16 red alerts for intense heat have been issued in cities across Italy, with authorities considering limiting access to tourist attractions to try to keep people safe.
