Police say phone records and DNA from a discarded pizza crust led them to charge a Long Island architect with the murders of three of the 11 victims from a long-unsolved string of killings known as the Gilgo Beach murders.

New York State Police spoke today about how their investigation led to naming Rex Heuermann as a suspect.

"We were more than willing to assign an investigator full-time and open up the full resources of the New York State Police to the task force," authorities said. "That investigator started the assignment in Feb. 2022. In March of 2022, the same New York State Police investigator reported to the leadership of the task force that a potential suspect had been identified."

"This suspect was Rex Heuermann," NY State Police said. "This was the first time that Rex Heuermann's name had come up and the first time that he had been identified as a potential suspect."

Heuermann is charged with first- and second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of three victims – Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. he's also the "prime suspect" in another woman's murder.
