Rishi Sunak has ruled out a general election on 2 May - the day of the local elections.

A Budget that was dubbed "underwhelming", the defection of a former party deputy chairman and the row over racist remarks by his party's biggest donor had all contributed to a feeling an early spring election was on the cards.

The decision to reject that has brought into focus what exactly the prime minister is going to do to revive flagging Conservative fortunes.
