On Oct. 16, 1979, the National Council of Jewish Women presented then-first lady Rosalynn Carter with an award for her efforts in the field of voluntarism. "It is important that we all realize our full capacity as human beings to live richly and responsibly, and to do our part to help create a better world," Mrs. Carter said in her acceptance speech.
