The five men on board the missing Titanic sub are believed to be dead, with OceanGate confirming the tragic end to the search shortly after the US Coast Guard found debris from the vesselThe five men on board the missing Titanic vessel have now been confirmed to have died.

The shocking news came just moments before a press conference led by United States Coast Guard's Captain Jamie Fredericks took place.

A statement from OceanGate said: "We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding and Paul-Henri Nargeolet have sadly been lost."These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world's oceans. Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time.

"We grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone they knew."

Meanwhile in a press converence today (June 22) Rear Adm. John Mauger, the First Coast Guard District commander, confirmed debris was found and that the debris 1,600ft from the wreckage of the Titanic. It was then determined that the debris was "consistent with a catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber".

The submarine was declared missing during an expedition to view the wreckage of the Titanic on Sunday (June 18).

The US Coastguard launched a search operation following the disappearance.

"We are exploring and mobilising all options to bring the crew back safely," it said. The submersible has since come under fire with numerous experts and former passengers criticising the vessel's lack of safety features.

CBS Sunday Morning reporter David Pogue says he was part of a voyage by an OceanGate Explorations vessel last summer that lost communication with its mothership for a period of two-and-a-half hours.Mr Pogue reported that he took a $250,000 (£195,000) per-person trip in 2022, which was marred by weather problems and transmission issues in cramped surroundings. In a final descent to the wreckage the vessel's communications system failed.

Mr Pogue explained in November: "There's no GPS underwater, so the surface ship is supposed to guide the ship to the shipwreck by sending text messages. But on this dive, communication somehow broke down. The sub never found the wreck," he said, adding it appeared to be "improvised from off-the-shelf parts".We were lost for two-and-a-half hours," reported another passenger at the time.

Mr Pogue also read a waiver that said: "This experimental vessel has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body, and could result in physical injury, emotional trauma, or death."
