Constance Marten, who is on trial over the death of her newborn daughter, has denied causing the baby any harm, telling jurors at the Old Bailey "I did nothing but show her love".

Appearing in the witness box for the first time, Marten, 36, told the court she felt "disbelief, shock and intense grief" when the baby, who was named Victoria, died.

A nationwide search was launched after a placenta was found in a burnt-out car belonging to Marten and her partner Mark Gordon, 49, near Bolton, Greater Manchester, on 5 January 2023.

Marten and Gordon both deny manslaughter by gross negligence, perverting the course of justice, concealing the birth of a child, child cruelty and causing or allowing the death of a child.
