Footage from Newport Beach, California, shows the ocean shimmering bright blue, caused by a phenomenon known as bioluminescence.

The water glows under the presence of photosynthetic plankton and the chemical reaction it undergoes.

Appearances of the phenomenon have increased, with one theory claiming that climate change is causing it.
