Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith said Mr Trump's lies "fuelled" the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.

He described the attack as "an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy."

Donald Trump is facing four criminal charges as part of an investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election result and the 6 January storming of the US Capitol building.
