Israeli forces have positioned themselves along Gaza’s border Sunday, preparing for an operation that Israel officials say is aimed at dismantling the military wing of the terrorist group, Hamas.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the U.S. is moving a second carrier strike group, the U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower, to the eastern Mediterranean, in a show of force meant to deter any allies of Hamas, such as Iran or Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group, from seeking to widen the war.

Israeli troops have also mounted a major presence of heavy weapons along the border with Lebanon.

More than 1,300 Israelis have been killed and 2,300 Palestinians have died since the fighting began more than one week ago following an attack by Hamas in Israel.
