Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said there were "appalling scenes" in London on Saturday with "thuggish violence towards police officers".

"I really think [the government] should also be thanking the police for the work they did in very difficult circumstances."

She added that she was "shocked" that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak did not thank the police in a statement he issued on Saturday evening.
