Armed forces minister James Heappey has announced he will leave his government post and stand down at the next election.

Security and defence editor Deborah Haynes says the armed forces are losing "a key advocate" with James Heappey stepping down and highlights the severity of appointing someone else given the war in Ukraine, the war in Gaza and the need to rebuild the armed forces.
